The North Atlantic Council today announced the results of the International Architectural Design Competition for the new NATO Headquarters
The North Atlantic Council today announced the results of the International Architectural Design Competition for the new NATO Headquarters, and awarded a prize of € 200,000 to the winning firm SOM + Assar - Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Inc. This is a multinational consortium led by SOM, an international company based in London, together with a Belgian associate, Assar. The second prize of € 150.000 went to the firm AAG-INT2-SHCA Swanke Hayden Connell International Ltd., and the third prize of € 100,000 was awarded to the firm Koetter, Kim Association, both multinational consortia based in London.
Today's decision concludes the Competition that was launched in January 2001. The International Design Competition was conducted under the auspices of the Paris-base International Union of Architects (IUA), which has long experience in organising similar design competitions, under rules first adopted by UNESCO in 1956. By following IUA guidelines, NATO has ensured the Competition was fair and underpinned by robust procedures. The North Atlantic Council's decision was based upon the recommendation of an International Jury of internationally renowned architects recommended by the IUA and senior NATO officials, under the Chairmanship of the Dean of the North Atlantic Council, Ambassador David Wright, Canada. In addition, technical experts from NATO's International Staff and the host nation supported the Jury's work. Aries Partnership International prepared the technical documentation.
While today's decision marks an important milestone, the North Atlantic Council emphasised the project is still in a very early stage. Many aspects of the new headquarters, including elements of design and budget, will be refined, taking into account NATO's evolving missions and responsibilities.
