A seminar on "NATO-Ukraine: non-military cooperation" was held in Kyiv on 17 December. It was organised by a Ukrainian NGO called "European Centre of Technological Safety", with the support of the Ministry of Ukraine for Emergencies and Affairs of Population Protection from the Consequences of the Chernobyl Catastrophe and the NATO Information and Documentation Centre in Kyiv.
The event highlighted non-military cooperation and marked the fifth anniversary of the NATO-Ukraine Memorandum of Understanding, signed between NATO's Civil Emergency Planning Directorate and Ukraine's Ministry of Emergencies in December 1997. Discussions focused on current civil emergency planning activities, future prospects for cooperation, flood preparedness and response in the Carpathian region, cross-border cooperation, scientific and economic cooperation, as well as cooperation in the field of information and telecommunications.
Participants included representatives from the Ukrainian government, academic and research institutions and NATO officials.
