France is hosting a humanitarian operations exercise, 22 September to 4 October, involving ten NATO and twelve Partner countries. Exercise Cooperative Key 2002 is taking place in Saint-Dizier, in the north-east of the country and aims to train military personnel in peace support operations.
The scenario is based on a request from the United Nations (UN) to NATO to deploy a multinational task force in support of humanitarian operations. Approximately 1 600 personnel and over 60 aircraft are involved in this exercise, as well as representatives of the UN High Commission for Refugees and several non-governmental organisations.
The exercise is scheduled by Allied Forces South Europe (CINCSOUTH) in Naples and is conducted by Allied Air Forces South (COMAIRSOUTH), also based in Naples.
