During a two-day meeting of the Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society (CCMS), a fruitful exchange of information took place on current pilot studies, short-term projects and workshops on the following themes: regional cooperation, the reduction of the environmental impact of military activities and the identification of new threats to security. A new CCMS pilot study on ''Effective Risk Response Strategies'' was also launched.

Representatives from 38 countries attended the plenary meetings, held at NATO HQ, Brussels on 21-22 March. On the first day, delegates from NATO member countries held meetings and were joined the next day by Partners, within the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council. Mr. Huseyn Bagirov, Minister for Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, made a presentation on the workshop on "Environmental Challenges in the Caspian Sea" which will be held in Baku on May 7-8, 2002. In addition, Dr. Bulat Yessekin gave an overview on the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia.
