Since 15 March, Lieutenant General Francisco Jose Gomez Carretero has temporarily assumed the duties of Major General Gunnar Lange in Skopje, in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia¹. Lt Gen Carretero will perform these duties until there is formal approval of a replacement for Maj. Gen. Lange, in accordance with established NATO practice and procedures.

Lt. Gen. Carretero is a Spanish Air Force fighter pilot with almost 40 years experience as a military officer. Before coming to Skopje, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff with Allied Forces Southern Europe.

The outgoing commander, Maj. Gen. Lange, served in Skopje for one year. His command initially incorporated KFOR Rear only, the logistics and supply element for NATO's forces in Kosovo. Last year, he established and led Operation Essential Harvest that collected arms and ammunition voluntarily turned over by ethnic Albanians, helping to build confidence in the broader peace process. The following Operation Amber Fox, in assistance of the protection of international monitors overseeing the implementation of the peace plan, was established in the Autumn of last year. It continues to contribute to the efforts of the international community in support of the peace process in the country.
