A annual training exercise, involving Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, took place near the Portuguese island of Porto Santo (Madeira Archipelago), from 28 January to 8 February. The aim of Unified Odyssey 2002 was for a NATO Maritime Immediate Reaction Force to conduct a small-scale crisis response operation, while providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief.

The scenario was based on a series of volcanic eruptions on a fictitious island and was divided into different stages: aerial reconnaissance, land reconnaissance and the conduct of operations. The exercise involved the Standing Naval Force Atlantic (SNFL), which is a squadron of eight to ten destroyers and frigates, marine platoons and local authorities. It was conducted by the Commander of SOUTHLANT, based in Oeiras, Portugal, which is under the command of the Allied Command Atlantic (ACLANT) in Norfolk, Virginia, USA.
