A NATO exercise focusing on the improvement of crisis response capabilities is taking place in Madrid from 21 January to 1 February. The aim of this annual exercise is to integrate and improve the military capabilities of NATO's southern region to carry out these types of operations.
The scenario is based on a fictitious situation where a crisis escalates into a conflict and necessitates a crisis response operation. The exercise involves approximately 450 military personnel and is being conducted in coordination with the United Nations, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Red Cross. It is a purely computer assisted exercise that will use simulation techniques.
Exercise Disciplined Warrior 2002 is conducted by Joint Command South West, Madrid, which is under the command of Regional Headquarters, Allied Forces South (AFSOUTH) in Naples, responsible for the Mediterranean area.
