''NATO membership is a big political challenge'', stated the Prime Minister of Latvia, Mr Andris Berzins, during a joint press conference with Lord Robertson. It is one of Latvia's three foreign policy priorities, together with EU membership and the development of good relations with our neighbours, he added.

Prime Minister Berzins came to NATO HQ on 14 December to meet with Lord Robertson. During the press conference, Lord Robertson stressed that the events of 11 September had re-emphasised the importance of NATO's enlargement process to security and stability in the Euro-Atlantic area.

Lord Robertson will visit Riga early next year to meet with Latvian political, economic and military leaders in order to assess the progress made by Latvia in meeting the criteria set out for NATO membership.
