As part of his tour of countries aspiring to NATO membership, Lord Robertson travelled to Bucharest, Romania, on 13 December. On this occasion, he met President Ion Iliescu, Prime Minister Adrian Nastase and members of the Romanian government. The Secretary General also met with parliamentarians and representatives of the civil society to discuss progress made by Romania in meeting membership criteria.
So far, of the nine countries which are participating in NATO's Membership Action Plan, Lord Robertson has been able to travel to four and will visit the other five early in 2002. Invitations for membership will be announced at NATO's Summit in Prague, November 2002.
