On 26 October, NATO celebrated ten years of partnership and cooperation with its partner countries from Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucases and Central Asia, by organising a high-level conference at NATO HQ, Brussels. Re-broadcasting of the morning events is available on the NATO web site, covering the speeches given by NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson, the former President of Finland, Martti Ahtisaari, former Prime Minister of Poland, Jan Krzysztof Bielecki and former Prime Minister of Italy, Emilio Colombo.
The conference brought together participants from the 19 NATO member countries and the 27 partner countries which form NATO's Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC). The conference covered all aspects of partnership with NATO, including military, economic, scientific, civil emergency planning aspects and parliamentary aspects of cooperation.
The EAPC was created in 1997 and succeeded the North Atlantic Cooperation Council (NACC), established in 1991. The NACC was the first political forum to bring together NATO members and former countries of the Warsaw Pact. It was complemented, in 1994, by the creation of NATO's Partnership for Peace programme which encourages practical cooperation with these countries.
