During a change of command ceremony at the regional HQ Allied Forces South (AFSOUTH) on 24 October, Admiral James Ellis, US Navy, was succeeded by Admiral Gregory G. Johnson, US Navy. Before assuming this new appointment, Admiral Johnson was Commander, US SIXTH Fleet and Naval Striking and Support Forces Southern Europe.
AFSOUTH is a regional command based in Naples, Italy, which comes under the overall command of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Forces Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium. It is responsible for NATO-led peace support operations in the Balkans.
