Task Force Amber Fox, the second NATO force to be requested by President Trajkovski, is being put into effect. It followed on from Operation Essential Harvest on 27 September and will last for three months, with the possibility of having its mandate extended if necessary.

Approximately 700 troops are being deployed under the command of Brigadier General Heinz-Georg Keerl of Germany, in addition to the 300 which are already in the country, to protect EU and OSCE monitors. These international monitors have started to arrive in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia¹, together with police advisors, police trainers and administrative support. Their role is to oversee the implementation of the peace plan agreed on 13 August 2001 and to help maintain stability and security in the country.

During a press conference at the NATO Press Centre in Skopje on 28 September, Brigadier General Keerl explained that the prime responsibility for the safety of the monitors remained with the Government. He defined the aim of Task Force Fox as being: "Liaison and exchange of information with international organisations and Macedonian authorities; in emergency situations, after consultation with the Government as appropriate, to provide medical evacuation and extraction for monitors."
