The thirty-day mission, Operation Essential Harvest, is coming to a successful end. It started on 27 August and finishes today, 26 September. It has accomplished more than expected, collecting a greater number of weapons and ammunitions than originally anticipated. A day before the end of the mission, the target of 3300 had already been surpassed.
NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson, went to Skopje, 25 September, to assess the outcome of the operation and to discuss with government officials the possibility of establishing a follow-on mission. He met with President Trajkovski, Prime Minister Georgievski, government officials including Foreign Minister Mitreva, Minister of Defence Buchkovski and Minister of Interior Boshkovsky and the President of the Parliament Andov. He also met with the NATO Senior Military Representative General Lange and Task Force Harvest Commander Brigadier General White-Spunner.
The North Atlantic Council, NATO's top decision-making body, has since adopted an operational plan following the request for a follow-on force made by President Trajkovski 19 September. The new mission would be named Operation Amber Fox and would be led by Germany. It would provide an additional level of safety for international monitors from the EU and the OSCE operating in the country. However, its size as well as its duration have yet to be determined in close collaboration with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia¹.
At a press conference held at the NATO Press Centre in Skopje on 25 September, Lord Robertson stated that the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia¹ has yet to complete the process of adopting constitutional amendments, in accordance with the Ohrid Agreement of 13 August 2001. He also thanked NATO troops for their courage and dedication to Operation Essential Harvest and paid a special tribute to the British soldier, Sapper Ian Collins, who was killed during the operation.
