Disaster relief professionals from NATO and Partner countries and international organisations gathered in Baku, Azerbaijan on 12-13 July 2001 for a seminar held in the framework of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) and Partnership for Peace.

The principal aim of the seminar was to exchange experiences on disaster relief operations and to discuss possible ways of improving disaster response capabilities and mechanisms on the local, regional, and international levels. In their opening remarks, Mr. Sharifov, Vice-Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Mr. Orosz, NATO's Director for Civil Emergency Planning, both pointed to the importance of integrated approaches to this important topic and welcomed the opportunity to share views and experiences in a regional setting.

Over 50 participants from 15 EAPC countries participated, as well as H.E. Ambassador Sinkovec, the Head of Slovenia's Mission to NATO and representatives of NATO's International Staff and the United Nations.
