Ambassador Sergio Balanzino (photo) officially left his post of NATO Deputy Secretary General on 29 June, a position he had held for seven years. Ambassador Alessandro Minuto Rizzo, who is currently Italy's Permanent Representative to the European Union's Political and Security Committee, will succeed Ambassador Balanzino. He was appointed by Lord Robertson on 6 February 2001 and will take up his functions on 16 July.
