Lord Robertson travelled to Chicago and Washington, 19-20 June, before attending the annual seminar organised by the Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic (SACLANT), Norfolk, Virginia, 21-22 June, which focused this year on NATO military capabilities.
In Chicago, he delivered a speech on "NATO - Managing the challenges of today and tomorrow" at the Chicago Council for Foreign Relations. He then spent two days in Washington where he met with the National Security Advisor, Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State, Colin Powell and Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld. They discussed the situation in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia1, missile defence, military capabilities, enlargement and other key issues on NATO's current agenda.
Lord Robertson also met leading senators and gave a speech at the European Institute, a Washington-based organisation that focuses on transatlantic relations.
