The NATO Military Committee and the Military Committee of the European Union met for the first time at NATO HQ on 12 June. At this initial meeting, both organisations exchanged information on issues directly related to the practical development of NATO-EU security cooperation.

The NATO Military Committee covered issues such as assets and capabilities, the NATO command structure, the future force structure and NATO's Defence Capabilities Initiative; for its part, the EU Military Committee raised points on the European Security and Defence Policy, its exercise programme and Command and Control for EU operations.

The joint meeting was chaired by Admiral Guido Venturoni, chairman of the NATO Military Committee and by General Gustav Hägglund, chairman of the EU Military Committee. General Hägglund (photo) is the former Chief of Defence Staff of Finland. He has been appointed chairman of the EU Military Committee for three years.

The next joint meeting is scheduled for the coming autumn.
