At a time when the role of women in the armed forces is a topical issue, with women being accepted in a growing number of different sectors of the armed forces throughout the Western hemisphere, the Committee on Women in the forces of NATO member countries is celebrating its 25 years of existence.
This year's celebratory annual meeting is taking place in Rome, 10-15 June, and is focusing on the past, practice and future perspectives of the Committee. As well as taking stock of its achievements and the awareness it has raised through the work of its sub-committees, the Committee will also look at the way ahead and future challenges.
The Committee on Women in NATO forces (CWINF) was established in 1961 and was officially recognised by NATO's Military Committee in 1976 (see NATO Update 24-30 May 2000). Its role is to advise NATO members on specific issues that affect women in the armed forces.
