The President of Armenia, Robert Kocharian, came to NATO HQ, Brussels on 6 June to meet with Lord Robertson. At a joint point de presse, the Secretary General explained that they had discussed the tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, as well as Armenia's continued participation in NATO's Partnership for Peace (PfP) programme and the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council. He highlighted that Armenia, which gained independence in 1991, was one of the first members to join PfP in 1994, adding that it had a valuable role to play in the security of the region. President Kocharian reiterated Armenia's commitment to integrating Euro-Atlantic institutions, which he said, has been a priority for the past few years.
