Nearly 100 NATO generals met at SHAPE, 5-6 June, for the Allied Command Europe Commander's Conference, organised by Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Joseph W. Ralston.
The implementation of NATO's new strategic concept and its effects on forces and capabilities was among the topics covered by the commanders attending from NATO's regional and component commands. Also present were field commanders who offered their insight on NATO's strategic concept, providing their strategic leaders with valuable information.
Among the speakers were Martti Athisaari (left on photo), former president of Finland, and Angelo Gnaedinger, delegate general Europe, the Middle East and North Africa for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The former President of Finland presented his views on the 'Lessons Learned' regarding management and crisis response while Angelo Gnaedinger provided a complementary presentation focusing on a review of ICRC lessons learned during response to operations.
Another key point in the conference was SACEUR's presentation of his strategic assessment of the Balkan Operation. Commander in Chief Allied Forces Southern Europe, Admiral James Ellis, followed General Ralston's presentation with an operational perspective of the theatre. Earlier this year, AFSOUTH was given operational oversight of NATO's operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo.
