Lord Robertson was invited to Rome on 1-2 June by the Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and outgoing Defence Minister Sergio Mattarella, to attend Italy's annual military parade and hold bilateral meetings. On this occasion, he also met with the Prime Minister designate Silvio Berlusconi, leader of Italy's majority party and head of the Freedom's House Coalition. Berlusconi won a majority at the 13 May elections and will form a new government shortly.

A number of ongoing issues were discussed such as Italy's contribution to SFOR and KFOR, the situation in Southern Serbia, in Kosovo and in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia1 and Italy's key role in NATO's Mediterranean Dialogue. During Berlusoni's meeting with Lord Robertson, he confirmed Italy's commitment to developing a European Security and Defence Identity within the Alliance and discussed other issues such as NATO enlargement, missile defence and the Defence Capabilities Initiative.
