Within a few days of each other, two European Defence Ministers paid an initial visit to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) to meet with NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Joseph W. Ralston, US Air Force, and senior members of the SHAPE staff.

Jan Troejborg, Minister of Defence of Denmark came on 1 June and Rudolf Scharping, Minister of Defence of the Federal Republic of Germany came on 5 June. Mr Troejborg received a special briefing on SHAPE issues, which outlined the priorities and challenges the strategic command is currently faced with. He also visited SHAPE's Partnership Coordination Cell where partner representatives are located and met with Danish members of the SHAPE community. On his visit, Scharping also met with military and civilian German representatives of the SHAPE community to discuss current issues.
