General William F. Kernan (left), US Army, Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic (SACLANT), paid his initial visit to SHAPE on 16-17 May 2001. The purpose of the trip was to meet with Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Joseph W. Ralston, US Air Force, and his staff. Deputy SACEUR, General Sir Rupert Smith (right), UK Army, hosted the SACLANT party from Norfolk, Virginia, USA on 17 May. They were briefed on SHAPE issues and participated in discussions with SHAPE senior officers in order to familiarize them with SHAPE and its staff.
Allied Command Atlantic is one of NATO's two strategic commands and the only one in North America. It is the senior military authority for NATO land, sea and air forces in the North Atlantic area, from the North Pole to the Tropic of Cancer, and from the East Coast of North America to the West Coast of Africa and Europe, approximately 12 million square miles. The Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic is a U.S. Army General nominated by the President of the United States and approved by the North Atlantic Council, NATO's highest governing body. He receives his direction from the NATO Military Committee. The Deputy SACLANT is a UK Royal Navy Admiral.
