A mine countermeasures exercise named Exercise Damsel Fair 2001, is taking place in Kusadasi Bay, off the coast of Turkey, 15-26 May. It aims to train participants in all aspects of mine warfare, including planning, execution and analysis.

Seven NATO countries (Germany, Greece, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain, Turkey and the United States) are participating in the NATO Mine Counter Measure Forces for the Mediterranean (MCMFORMED) mine clearance operation, which will allow the simulated insertion of NATO peacekeeping troops to a fictitious country.

MCMFORMED was activated in 1999 and is part of NATO's immediate reaction forces.
