NATO's Infrastructure Committee is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a series of events organised on 14 and 15 May, which were highlighted by a speech given by Lord Robertson during a special commemorative meeting of the Infrastructure Committee.

Established in 1951 in the aftermath of the Second World War, the Infrastructure Committee is one of NATO's longest standing permanent committees within the Alliance. Its main purpose is to ensure the effective functioning of NATO's integrated military command structure by authorising funds for the construction of headquarters, pipelines, airfields, storage depots, port facilities and maintenance bases as well as for the provision of communication and information systems and air defence systems.

Despite the radical changes in the security environment over the past ten years, the Infrastructure Committee is still fulfilling a crucial role in ensuring that the Strategic Commands have the necessary infrastructure for Article 5 operations as well as for NATO's Peace Support Operations in the Balkans.
