An exercise in naval coastal warfare procedures, using a peace support scenario, has taken place in Newport News, Virginia, 14-23 May. Five NATO members (Belgium, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States) and seven partner countries (Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Latvia, Romania, Sweden and Ukraine) participated in Exercise Cooperative Tide 2001. The exercise aimed to train officers in co-ordinating coastal defence techniques and naval control of shipping.
