The 2001 NATO Economics Colloquium was held on 2-4 May 2001 in the Romanian capital, Bucharest, and dealt with "The Interrelationship between Regional Economic Cooperation, Security and Stability". The main regions discussed were South Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia. Actual settings, needs, opportunities and constraints of regional economic cooperation in these areas were extensively highlighted over the two days.

Some 120 participants from 30 Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council countries, including parliamentarians, governmental officials and researchers, as well as several international organisations, attended the conference. NATO was represented by its Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs, Ambassador Klaus-Peter Klaiber, and the Director of its Economic Committee, Chairman of the Meeting, Dr. Patrick Hardouin. Romania was represented by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mircea Dan Geoana, and Defence, Mr. Ioan Mircea Pascu, as well as the Governor of the Central Bank, Mr. Mugur Isarescu. The concluding speech was given by the Special Co-ordinator of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe, Mr. Bodo Hombach, who strongly underlined the need and potential for regional cooperation.
