NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson, worked through a busy schedule during his two-day trip to Warsaw, 29-30 March. On his arrival in the Polish capital, he met with President Aleksander Kwasniewski, Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek, Minister of Foreign Affairs Prof. Wladyslaw Bartoszewki, Minister of National Defence Mr Bronislaw Komorowski and the Joint Foreign and Defence Commissions of the Sejm -the lower House of Parliament- and Senate.
During his bilateral meetings with government officials, he commended Poland for the progress made so far in reforming its armed forces, but encouraged his interlocutors to launch the six-year modernisation programme on defence currently being debated in Parliament.
The following day, Lord Robertson met with other government and parliamentary officials. He also held a meeting with the leader of the largest opposition party, Mr Miller, who heads the Democratic Left Alliance, and with top military commanders. Later in the afternoon, he delivered a speech at Warsaw University in which he stressed the need for Europe to overcome divisions stemming from economic disparities between East and West and instability in the Balkans. This could be achieved, he explained, by broadening and deepening relations with Partner countries participating in NATO's Partnership for Peace programme and the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council.
