High-level officials and academics gathered in Rome on 26 March to analyse security threats and crisis management in South-eastern Europe. The Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Nebojsa Covic, and the Defence Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Jozo Rados, were invited to the event, as well as Lord Robertson who gave the keynote address. In his speech, the Secretary General underlined NATO's immediate priorities in the region: firstly, the isolation and control of ethnic Albanian extremists inciting violence in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia1, secondly, bringing peace and stability to the Presevo Valley and thirdly, continuing to help maintain a secure environment in Kosovo by stopping violence against ethnic minorities.

The Italian Minister of Defence, Hon. Sergio Mattarella, gave the closing address of this particularly timely conference which was co-sponsored by NATO and the Italian Center for International Policy Studies and the Center for Military Strategic Studies.
