NATO mediators brokered a cease-fire between the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and representatives of ethnic Albanians from southern Serbia on 12 March.
The agreement, which took effect immediately, constitutes a key step in building political and inter-ethnic reconciliation in that volatile region. Representatives of both sides are expected to begin direct negotiations within a week.
NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson called upon all communities "to provide their full support to these efforts to find a peaceful solution to the problems in southern Serbia".
