Mr Hans Haekkerup, Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN in Kosovo, came to NATO HQ on 28 February. He addressed the North Atlantic Council -NATO's top decision-making body- on the progress being made in Kosovo, namely developments in law and order, the political process, the economic situation in the province and the general concern to work toward a multiethnic society. The situation in Southern Serbia, including the issue of the Ground Safety Zone were also discussed at some length, as was the situation in Mitrovica.
Mr Haekkerup took up his functions at the beginning of the year, replacing Dr Kouchner. He was formerly Defence Minister of Denmark, a position he had held since 1993.
