A humanitarian assistance exercise was conducted by NATO from 18-22 February in the typically hurricane-affected area of the Caribbean. Forces from NATO's Standing Naval Force Atlantic, under the command of Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic (SACLANT), tested its ability to provide humanitarian aid after tropical storms and hurricanes on the island of Curaçao, during exercise "Relieve Discomfort".

The region is subject to extreme weather conditions from June to November and often calls for assistance. Ships from Canada, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States participated in the exercise.

NATO's Standing Force Atlantic is comprised of ships drawn from, i.e., Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States, which form the permanent membership of the force and Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Portugal and Spain which join periodically.
