The Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia, Dr. Nebojsa Covic, and the Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Goran Svilanovic came to NATO HQ on 15 February to discuss their proposal for resolving the current tensions in southern Serbia. They met with NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson, as well as with the Ambassadors of the North Atlantic Council -NATO's top decision making body.

The visit comes just one month after Foreign Minister Goran Svilanovic's meeting at NATO HQ on 10 January, which was the first time a Yugoslav official had come to the headquarters since the country's democratic transition.

At a joint press conference, Lord Robertson strongly welcomed the initiative to peacefully solve the crisis, initially launched by Dr. Covic in his capacity as President of the Serbia/Federal Republic of Yugoslavia co-ordinating body responsible for addressing the situation in southern Serbia.

Lord Robertson said the meeting had been very useful and historic, stressing that "the proposal presents a break with the past." He added that the plan was "strongly welcomed", even though it raises questions which will need to be further discussed.

Dr. Covic stated that events of the past will not be forgotten, but that Serbia is prepared to move forward for peace. "We are prepared for co-operation and need the full support and assistance of NATO for a peaceful resolution of the crisis in southern Serbia."

"It is very important for me, " Dr. Covic said, "that the violence, the killing and insecurity in the region stops." Foreign Minister Svilanovic added that "we want all people in the region to feel safe."

Lord Robertson echoed this objective and concluded the press conference urging the ethnic Albanian community in southern Serbia to enter into a dialogue, for this proposal, with the government in Belgrade.
