Lord Robertson travelled to Berlin on 25 January to meet with Defence Minister Rudolf Scharping. While he was in the German capital, he gave speeches at two different venues: he was invited to deliver this year's Manfred Wörner Memorial Lecture, organised by the Konrad Adenauer-Stiftung and to address the fifth Editors' forum, organised by the Federal College for Security Policy Studies.

In his Manfred Wörner Memorial Lecture, Lord Robertson paid tribute to the former NATO Secretary General (1988-1994), stating that Manfred Wörner had "acted as a visionary catalyst for NATO's transformation". In his speech to the Editors' forum, he focused on European security in the 21st century, outlining NATO's priorities for 2001.
