The Romanian Prime Minister, Adrian Nastase, came to NATO HQ on 24 January to meet with Lord Robertson. Their discussions centred around Romania's preparations for possible future NATO membership, its contribution to KFOR and SFOR and South-eastern Europe. They also discussed defence reform and the first series of measures in place to downsize and reform the armed forces and improve interoperability. The second phase will involve equipment modernisation.
Romania is one of the nine countries participating in the Alliance's Membership Action Plan (MAP), launched in April 1999. MAP aims to give concrete advice and assistance to aspiring members.
