New command arrangements for SFOR and KFOR announced last October (See NATO Update 18-24 October 2000) are being put into place. Since 18 January, command authority for the NATO-led forces in Kosovo (KFOR) has been transferred from Supreme Allied Headquarters Europe (SHAPE) to Allied Forces Southern Europe (AFSOUTH), based in Naples. The transfer of command authority to AFSOUTH for NATO-led forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina (SFOR) will be implemented at a later date.

AFSOUTH is a regional headquarters which comes under the authority of SHAPE. It will direct daily operations in the area, while SHAPE will continue to provide strategic military guidance, in accordance with decisions taken by NATO's top decision-making body - the North Atlantic Council.
