The Vladivostok State University of Economics and Services has won a NATO Science grant to develop a computer network in Primorye Territory. This project will create a regional network infrastructure linking the educational and scientific centres of Vladivostok, Nakhodka, Ussuriisk and Artyom. It also plans to maintain links with the University of California, with which it set up the project, by purchasing a satellite communications ground station.
The Vladivostok grant is one of thirteen Networking Infrastructure Grants awarded last year to improve the level and quality of academic networks in remote geographical areas of Partner countries. This grant concerns "PARNET - Regional Network of Academic and Research Community in Primorsky Krai". The co-directors of the project are Dr. V. Kryukov, of the Vladivostok State University of Economics, and Dr. A. Bordetsky of TELCOT Institute, San Ramon, California, USA. The NATO-appointed consultant is Dr. Warren Jackson, of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, who will shortly be making his first visit to the project organisers. The grant is BEF 5.6 million.
