Ms Vaira Vike-Freiberga, President of Latvia, came to NATO HQ on 28 November for a bilateral meeting with Lord Robertson. They had what Ms Vike-Freiberga described as "a frank discussion" on the progress Latvia had achieved so far in reforming its armed forces. The President stressed that her country was firmly committed to increasing and improving its defence capability in preparation for possible membership in 2002 and was aware that the next two years would be crucial for the Alliance, the European Union and the nine Membership Action Plan countries. Ms Vike-Freiberga and Lord Robertson also discussed regional issues, namely developments in the Baltic region.
