The first meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Working Group on Scientific and Environmental Cooperation took place on 18 October 2000, at NATO Headquarters. It was co-chaired by the NATO Assistant Secretary General for Scientific & Environmental Affairs, Mr. Yves Sillard, and Ukrainian First Deputy Minister for Education and Science, Mr. Yaroslav S. Yatskiv. The Working Group was set up following an exchange of letters between Mr. Yatskiv and Mr. Sillard.

At this first meeting a review was made of the current collaboration with Ukraine under the NATO Science Programme, and the Environmental and Society Programme of the Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society (CCMS), with over 120 grants or fellowships awarded to Ukrainian scientists in the past year. Views were exchanged on how the effectiveness of the collaboration might be improved and how some administrative problems might be resolved. The meeting will report to the NATO-Ukraine Commission on the outcome of its deliberations. The particularly constructive nature of the collaborative relationship was a matter of satisfaction to participants in the Working Group.
