Matters of common interest and concern to NATO and the UN were raised when UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan came to NATO HQ on 5 October.

The elections in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, peace-keeping in Kosovo and future security challenges were raised. Furthermore, NATO's contribution as a regional organisation to UN peace-keeping operations was discussed. This came as a consequence of the pledge made at the UN Millennium Summit held in New York at the beginning of September to strengthen the UN's peace-keeping capacities.

One of the UN's general aims, outlined in the Summit Report, is to reduce the number of regional conflicts by strengthening the respect for international law, protecting the vulnerable, reinforcing peace-keeping operations, targeting sanctions, pursuing arms reductions and increasing the UN's capacities for timely crisis management.
