Lt. Gen. William F. Kernan, the successor to Admiral W. Gehman Jr. as NATO's Supreme Allied Command, Atlantic (SACLANT), officially took up his functions during a change of command ceremony on 5 September 2000. The ceremony took place aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CV 71) at the Norfolk naval station, Norfolk, Virginia, USA, where ACLANT is based.

Lt. Gen. Kernan is also the Commander in Chief, US Joint Forces Command. He previously served as commanding general of the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and more recently as Director of Plans, Policy and Strategic Assessments at the US Special Operations Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida and Commander of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He is one of the first non naval commanders to hold these two posts.
