A sign that normalisation is gaining ground in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the recent transfer of supervisory responsibility of the Republika Srpska special police service from SFOR to the United Nations International Police Task Force (IPTF).

The Specialised Police Force (SPS) is responsible for high risk operations such as anti-terrorist activities and fighting organised crime. It was put under the supervision of SFOR in 1996 when it was still considered to be a potential nest of unrest. The Commander of SFOR, Lt. Gen. Ron Adams, stated: "This transfer is appropriate because the new specialised police service has the missions, equipment and skills of similar police units in European democracies".
