Lord Robertson travelled to Berlin on 29 June to meet with Chancellor Schröder, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fischer, and the Minister of Defence Scharping. The European Security and Defence Identity (ESDI) was at the top of the agenda since Germany has recently taken initiatives to reshape its Armed Forces. For instance, the Bundeswehr is being slimmed down to allow for an increase in rapid reaction forces, in line with the needs identified within Europe's new security environment. Lord Robertson congratulated the German government on these initiatives which will contribute to the building of a European defence capability.
