Defence ministers from NATO and Partner countries will meet for their regular six-monthly session at NATO HQ on 8 and 9 June.
Discussions in the Nuclear Planning Group will include a proposal to set up a high-level group with Russia on the safety of nuclear weapons, and a briefing on recent talks between the US and Russian presidents on nuclear non-proliferation and missile defence issues.
The Defence Planning Committee - which includes all NATO countries except France, which is not part of NATO s integrated military command structure - looks set for a lively debate. Ministers will study a report on how far each country has moved towards boosting allied defence capabilities by building key force goals into national defence plans. NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson wants to see more progress on reforming military forces.
The Chairman of the Military Committee, Admiral Venturoni, and the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Ralston, will brief the North Atlantic Council on the situation in the Balkans.
Allied ministers will then hold a series of meetings with their counterparts from Partner countries. Apart from cooperation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo, which will be a key item on the agenda of each of these meetings, the NATO-Ukraine Commission will focus on improving interoperability between NATO and Ukrainian forces and on the need for defence reform in Ukraine; the NATO-Russia Permanent Joint Council will discuss areas of cooperation in defence and military matters; and finally, ministers from the 46 countries participating in the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council, including all NATO countries, will meet to discuss cooperation in the areas of conflict prevention and crisis management.
