A NATO co-sponsored seminar on European security was held in Banska Bystrica, central Slovakia on 27 and 28 April 2000.

Speakers from the UN, OSCE, EU, NATO and NATO member states presented their vision of European security and discussed the future architecture of the once divided continent. The event was opened by the Slovak Foreign Minister, Jan Figel, who explained the benefits to Slovakia of integration into Euro-Atlantic structures, to the predominantly student audience.

The seminar also launched the new Euro-Atlantic Centre in Banska Bytrica, an NGO aiming to foster support for and understanding of the EU and NATO in the central Slovak region. It is run by a dynamic team of young students, who have already secured funding for their venture from a number of agencies including the United States Information Service and the Marshall Fund.
