The North Atlantic Council -NATO's highest decision-making body- met on Friday, 25 February, to discuss the situation in the divided town of Kosovska-Mitrovica, where there have been violent confrontations between ethnic Serbs and Albanians. Mitrovica is a flashpoint that is attracting extremists from both sides. KFOR has had to send reinforcements to deal with the unrest but the situation is under control.

The allies reaffirmed their commitment to take firm action against anyone who attempts to disturb the peace in the province, and their determination to complete the job of creating a democratic, stable and multi-ethnic Kosovo. KFOR is working jointly with the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) to promote a united Mitrovica, while re-establishing law and order in the city. UNMIK is going ahead with plans to return many Kosovar Albanians to their homes in the northern area of the town. Meanwhile, KFOR has tightened security and intensified its search for illegal weapons.
