Air traffic controllers at Sarajevo airport are being trained by troops from the NATO-led stabilisation force (SFOR) in ground control, tower control and flight data in a general effort to return the airport to normal operation. At the moment, a team of nine civilians are following this 240-hour training programme in order to qualify for their International Air Traffic Controller's licence. The training is taking place in the recently re-constructed Civilian Air Control Tower.

The training programme is part of the long-term civilianisation programme signed between Bosnia's Department of Civilian Aviation and SFOR. Only a month ago (see NATO Update 19-25 January), SFOR handed over the control of the upper airspace in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) to the country's civilian aviation authorities as part of the on-going normalisation process.
