Defence Planning after the Washington Summit is the theme of this year s Defence Planning Symposium held at the SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Power Europe) School in Oberammergau, Germany, 17-19 January.

Senior political and military representatives from NATO member countries will focus on the Alliance s new missions and the improvement of its defence capabilities (known as the Defence Capabilities Initiative), the growing role of the European role within NATO, including the involvement of the Western European Union, and the development of NATO s future force structure.

This symposium will be followed by a Partnership for Peace (PfP) Symposium on 20-21 January, on the theme of Partnership: An Alliance fundamental security task. It will look into ways of putting into practice the growing role of Partners outlined in the new Strategic Concept. Their participation in specific Alliance initiatives and in crisis management will also be discussed. Partners have been able to participate in PfP Planning Symposiums since they were first held in conjunction with Defence Planning Symposiums in 1997.
