The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Dr. Javier Solana, announces the appointment of Dr. Edgar Buckley (UK) as Assistant Secretary General for Defence Planning and Operations with effect from 6 September 1999.
Dr. Buckley was born on 17 November 1946 in Ilford, Essex, United Kingdom.
Dr. Edgar Buckley was until recently Assistant Under Secretary of State (Home and Overseas) in the Ministry of Defence in London, responsible for policy advice on all UK military operations and UK defence relations with countries outside Europe and North America. He was appointed to that position in August 1996 after completing four years as Defence Counsellor in the UK Delegation to NATO/WEU.
Dr. Edgar Buckley succeeds Mr. Anthony Cragg who left NATO on 5 September 1999.
