The NATO Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society
(CCMS) will meet in Washington D.C., on November 13-14,
1995 for a plenary meeting and roundtable
discussion on Environmental Security.

The roundtable will be co-sponsored by the U.S.
Department of Defense and the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA). North Atlantic Co-operation Council (NACC)
and Partnership for Peace (PfP) countries will
participate.

The event will provide an opportunity for an exchange
of views on the importance of incorporating environmental
security aspects into national security policy. The
objective is to stimulate a dialogue mainly between
environmental and defence specialists to identify
environmental risks worldwide that might contribute to
economic, political and social instability.

Representatives from Canada, Denmark, Germany and
Norway will make presentations on what governments can do
to respond to environmental security issues as part of
national security strategies on global environmental
risks, transboundary issues and environmental
security.

Key note speakers include: Dr. J.-M. Cadiou, NATO
Assistant Secretary General for Scientific and
Environmental Affairs, Ms S. Goodman, U.S. Deputy Under
Secretary of Defence for Environmental Security, Admiral
Owen, Vice Chairman US Joint Chiefs of Staff,
William Nitze, Assistant Administrator for
International Activities, US EPA.
